From Poaching to Sustainable Responsible Conservation
Wagtail Bwindi Forest Lodge is a book of pages written through the history of one of the many families who once lived and depended entirely on the natural Bwindi Forest for all life provisions. Unfortunately, when Bwindi became a protected national park, communities that had depended on the forest for generations faced a profound change.
For one former family, that change became an opportunity to create a different future we are witnessing presently. Wagtail Bwindi Forest Lodge was born from that transformation—a community-owned conservation lodge created to demonstrate that protecting the forest and improving local livelihoods can go hand in hand. Intentionally nestled within indigenous forest, Wagtail is more than a place to stay.
It is a place where visitors can experience conservation through the eyes of the people who live closest to the forest. Local communities are at the centre of the lodge’s work, gaining opportunities through agriculture, traditional crafts, cultural experiences, conservation activities, and wildlife-corridor initiatives.
