At Wagtail, we built more than a place to sleep. We're a small, locally-run team rooted in the Bwindi forest.
View More About UsView More About UsWe approach hospitality through practicality, warmth, and local knowledge.
Every detail we build in carries intention, from the stone in the walls to the tea waiting after an early trek. That's how we run a lodge that works, and feels right.
A quiet place at the forest's edge.
Wagtail Forest Lodge sits in Rubuguri, a small town on the southern boundary of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, within easy reach of both the Rushaga and Nkuringo trailheads.

Why we built here
Rubuguri sits right on Bwindi's southern edge, close to the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors where several gorilla families have been habituated for trekking. We wanted somewhere within easy reach of that experience, close enough that guests aren't spending half their trip on the road.
Mornings in the mist
Every room looks out toward the Kigezi hills or the Virunga volcanoes beyond, and every morning starts the same way here: birdsong, mist lifting off the ridgeline, and the quiet business of a lodge getting ready for the day's trek.
Built to sit gently in its surroundings
The lodge was built using local materials and local labour wherever possible: stone from the surrounding hills, timber frames, and thatched roofing that keeps rooms naturally cool without heavy air conditioning. It's a modest build by design.
Simple by design
No glass towers, no manicured lawns competing with the forest canopy behind them. Just solid, comfortable rooms and a lounge you'll want to linger in after a long trekking day.
What makes Wagtail different.
Closest to the trailheads
Minutes from both the Rushaga and Nkuringo gorilla trekking gates, less time on the road, more time resting before an early start.
Eco-built, not just eco-branded
Local stone, timber, and thatch, built with local labour. A lodge that sits inside the landscape rather than fighting it.
A team that knows the forest
Staff drawn from Rubuguri and nearby villages, with a lifetime of practical knowledge about trekking days, weather, and permits.
Home-cooked, honest food
Local and international dishes from our small kitchen, hearty enough for pre-dawn starts, comforting enough for the evening after.
More than one activity
Gorilla habituation, Batwa cultural visits, and some of Uganda's richest birdwatching, all arranged for you on request.
Small enough to notice you
We keep Wagtail small on purpose, a handful of rooms means we can actually pay attention to the details of your stay.
Simple, comfortable rooms.
Built for one purpose: a good night's sleep before, and after, a long day in the forest.
Single Room
A self-contained room built for solo travellers, with a comfortable bed, private bathroom, and everything you need before an early trekking start.
Double Room
A comfortable double bed, warm bedding for cool nights, and a private bathroom, traditionally crafted for every tourist dreaming of the gorilla experience.
Twin Room
Set up for friends or family travelling together, with two single beds, forest-facing views, and space to spread out gear after a long trekking day.
Triple Room
Designed to comfortably sleep three guests, with ample space for adults sharing, traditional charm, and the privacy needed for lasting safari memories.
More than a place to stay.
Bwindi is best known for gorilla trekking, but there's a good deal more to fill a few days here.

The main reason most guests come to Rubuguri.
From the Rushaga sector you can track habituated families including Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Kahungye, and Bushingye; the Nkuringo sector is also close by. Treks start early in the morning and can last anywhere from two to six hours, depending on where the gorillas have moved to that day. We help arrange permits and transport to the trailhead, so all you need to do is show up ready to walk.

More time with a family still learning to trust.
For guests who want more time with the gorillas than a standard trek allows, the habituation experience gives up to four hours observing a family that is still growing used to human presence, alongside the researchers and trackers who work with them daily. It is slower, quieter, and gives you a real sense of the patient work behind every trekking permit.

The forest's original inhabitants.
A visit with the local Batwa community, including traditional song, dance, and storytelling about life in Bwindi before it became a national park. A good half-day addition either side of a trekking day, and one of the more memorable parts of a stay here for many of our guests.

One of Uganda's richest birding sites.
Species regularly seen in the area include the Black-billed Turaco, Black Bee-eater, and Regal Sunbird, among many others. Early morning walks near the lodge are often rewarding even without a dedicated guide, though we can arrange one on request for a proper birding morning.
Word from people who've just come back.
“We arrived exhausted after the drive from Kigali and the team had hot tea waiting. The room was simple but exactly what we needed before a 5am start into the forest.”
“The staff arranged our Batwa community visit on a rest day and it ended up being one of the best parts of the whole trip. Genuinely warm hospitality throughout.”
“Close enough to Rushaga that we barely had to travel on trek morning. Good food, comfortable bed, and the views over the hills at breakfast were unbeatable.”
